About the Role: We are looking for an Engineering Technician to join our Metals R&D team. In this role, your commitment will be supporting various Metals R&D operations, which can include industrial micro-CT scanning, corrosion testing, fatigue testing, prototyping (laser processing, shape-setting, electropolishing, dimensional inspection, visual inspection), tensile testing, radial force testing, etc.  Initial commitments will focus on supporting operations in our industrial micro-CT (X-Ray Computed Tomography) lab, where we support failure investigations, first article inspections, and R&D design evaluations with CT scan data and data analysis. With guidance from senior team members, you will design and assemble complex fixturing to aid with the CT scanning of endovascular stent-grafts in simulated anatomical and physiologic condition, and you will build 3D virtual representations of complex internal and external structures and perform defect detection and accurate measurement of complex 3D geometries through the use of sophisticated computer software tools.

 

This role will be located at our facility in Flagstaff, Arizona. 

 
Responsibilities: 
  • Safely operate a cabinet-based industrial X-ray CT (Computed Tomography) scanning system while protecting personnel, the equipment, and product samples at all times
  • Competently and efficiently develop specific CT scanning techniques tailored to meet the inspection requirements of the project team for their specific product
  • Design and build complex sample fixturing methods to support CT scan data acquisition for cardiovascular medical devices in simulated implant conditions (anatomical/physiological)
  • Process scan datasets to visualize, quantify, and analyze key features through activities such as failure analysis, First Article Inspections, and R&D evaluations
  • Compile scan data in an appropriate file format and perform analysis of scan data per customer requirements (e.g. CAD comparison, metrology inspection, porosity analysis, dimensional characterization, etc)
  • Maintain records of developed techniques, maintenance information, project interface information, and project scan data deliverables
  • Perform maintenance duties on company equipment per instructions and/or per direction of a manufacturer service representative or senior team member
  • Handle Biohazard samples from clinical explants and/or Science Center retrievals for CT scan evaluations of device performance
  • Complete Level 1 X-Ray Technical Training for Digital Radiography (DR) and Computed Tomography (CT) within a year, and complete Level 2 Advanced CT training within two years, including successful demonstration of mastering the topics at completion of each training
 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Minimum 2 years hands-on experience in a medical device manufacturing/R&D work environment (or an Associate/bachelor's degree in a technical discipline with a minimum 1-year relevant hands-on experience)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and strong computer skills, including networking, data transfer, and storage of large files
  • Strong interest in growing scientific/technical skills and knowledge 
  • Ability to interact compassionately and effectively with customer project teams and Metals R&D team members
  • Ability to self-direct and self-motivate with a strong work ethic
  • Ability to take direction and work independently, as needed
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and implement solutions to technical problems, independently and in partnership with others
  • Demonstrated ability to be a supportive team member who has a track record of being a dependable high contributor, taking accountability, de-escalating conflict, and willing to be of assistance to others outside of your primary commitments
  • Hands-on mechanical aptitude with physical ability to lift 25 lbs stand for extended periods, and reach into a large X-Ray enclosure
  • Ability to travel up to 10%

 

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Experience using CT analysis software such as Volume Graphics, Polyworks, Simpleware, Grasshopper, ImageJ or similar
  • Experience with CAD software (SOLIDWORKS, Rhino, AutoCAD, or similar)
  • Experience operating a 3D printer (Formlabs Form 3 or similar)
